African security is both ingenious and daunting. Though Kigali is one of the safest cities in the world, petty crime is a reality. Our home security is a hodge-podge of old and new.

On my second day at The Office Rwanda, I got inspired by some of the things I was seeing and wanted to share.

The chalkboard for collaborative brainstorming.

The view from the front balcony.

A conference table or a ping pong table?

Such a bright space.  I could stare out that open door all day.

I have recently begun renting space at an innovative venture called The Office Rwanda (www.theofficerw.com).  It is still in its infant stages, for which I am grateful.  I love being a part of a new, creative initiative for entrepreneurs and freelancers.  Collaboration is the name of the game here and I have already met and begun working with a fellow-photographer.  I am excited for future projects that blossom from within these walls.

A panoramic view of The Office.

Africa as envisioned by founder, Jon Stever, who had welders and metal workers devise this very clever Africa out of every continent on earth.  Can you spot Italy?

The Rwandan Orphans Project (www.rwandanorphansproject.org), a San Diego-based non-profit, works to educate and raise confident kids.  I had the chance to teach them some basics of storytelling and paper airplane making.  They also truly loved mugging for the camera.

During my travels throughout Rwanda, I've met some very interesting people.  The folks below are all doing their part to introduce concepts like family planning, malaria prevention and gender-based violence prevention.  I was particularly taken with the Lutheran priest who actively taught his congregation about all types of family planning (including female birth control and vasectomy).  He knew that he was taking a risk as a leader of his church, but felt it was imperative to the health of his community.

Priest meditates on his next sermon.

Awaiting his congregation.

This family was being taught about the various forms of birth control available to them in their remote Rwandan village in the Eastern Province.

This woman had once been the victim of gender-based violence, but through community intervention and training, she and her husband have learned to change their behaviors and stay married.

What are the meanings of the colors of the Rwanda flag?

Blue represents joy and peace.
Yellow symbolizes mineral wealth and economic development.
Green indicates prosperity and natural resources.

Which image is your favorite?

We had the magical chance to visit the home of Bilbo Baggins on our honeymoon last November.

When we arrived, we were sure to approach anyone we met (while trying to get driving directions) and simply stating, "Shirrrrrrre. Bagginsssssss." Our query worked.

Bilbo's neighborhood.

The hills of Hobbiton.

Samwise Gamgee's front door and immaculate garden.

Haystacks for all the herbivores of Hobbiton.

The tree atop Bilbo's house, that they reconstructed here for the movie, after shipping it from Asia. Every leaf is nylon and glued on. I have one tucked away for safe keeping.
