Have I mentioned how mirthful it is to work at The Office (www.theofficerw.com)?

My favorite home-away-from-home, The Office (www.theofficerw.com), hosted some of the movies this year for The Rwanda Film Festival. We enjoyed our night under the stars and an interesting film called "Suffering Grasses," about the current conflict in Syria.

Joey Blake and the Rwanda All-Stars performed on the first night of KigaliUP! I was awestruck by the keyboardist and am grateful to my camera for capturing an iota of said awe.

So, it begins.  The onslaught of images from this year's KigaliUP! Festival.  I particularly dig this image of Ras Kayaga on the first night of the concert.  He's one helluva dynamic performer.

I'm organizing all the photographers and photography for KigaliUP! this year (my 2nd year at the helm). These are my not-too-shabby-if-I-do-say-so-myself DIY All Access photo passes for me and my 16 togs. Getting excited for this weekend's performances!

As a part of a book club that began by reading "Startup Communities" by Brad Feld, we (the book club members) decided to hold an "EOM: Entrepreneurs Open Mic", with the theme "Failure." A Fail Jam was set up for folks to share bungles, botches and disasters they've experienced and what they have learned from those events. The Happy Hour was held at the inimitable Office Rwanda in Kiyovu

Pre-Fail Jam Mingle.

The Fail Jam: Brave entrepreneurs baring their souls to share wisdom and experience.

Looking forward to our next HH EOM in two weeks!

July 10th Special Edition

Today, some innovative and creative folks brought some other innovative and creative folks together to discuss the prospect of starting Africa's second-only Creative Mornings event group in Kigali (the first being in Cape Town, SA).  We all enthusiastically supported the idea and inadvertently became the steering committee.  I'm wicked psyched to have a new place to network, share and collaborate!  Thanks to all who attended.

The final days of my time spent in the land of the Americans and the land of the Zanzibarians.  Yep, that's a word.

An abandoned John Deere back hoe in a similarly abandoned parking lot in Maynard, MA.

A ridiculously cute gaggle of toddlers on the occasion of the candle blower's third birthday in Washington, DC.

The Lincoln Memorial, as seen from the terrace of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

The "super" moon in the sky we flew through on our way to my husband's surprise 40th birthday weekend in Zanzibar.

The birthday boy's smile makes the trip perfect in Nungwi, Zanzibar.

The staff of Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel set up an intimate and private beach dinner for Mark's birthday celebration.  When we finally arrived at the table for our meal, the sun was setting and the torches were alight.  They even serenaded my husband with a parade of dancers, drummers and singers and a homemade birthday cake.

The Fourth of July, the anniversary of America's Independence in 1776 and of Rwanda's Liberation from the genocide in 1994. Here, we have some Americans and Rwandans (and one Canadian) celebrating. Yours truly is proud to say that I was the one who started the trend (with the prompting of my gracious hostess, Cathy, pictured top left).

Continuing the look back on my June escapades, here are some images from my time in New England as well as Washington, DC.

My awesome, 90 year old Gram with her sense of humor very much in tact. In Nashua, New Hampshire.

Canada goose, mugging for the annoying, pestering, never-leave-her-alone photographer. In Maynard, MA.

Mama goose's babies.

Leaning birches in Maynard, MA.

Super clean, simply elegant tiling on the walls of the ladies' room at Boston's Logan International Airport.

Kigali City Tower. I've featured this building in various POTD, but here you can see some of what goes on inside. Kigali's newest mall and tallest building is smack in the center of Town.

Just outside the main entrance to the mall portion of the building.

A closer view.

The other Nakumatt department store. This one is always much quieter than the one featured in yesterday's POTD--it still hasn't caught on as a popular option since the Nakumatt at UTC is older, more established and only one block away.

All's quiet in the dairy and produce aisle.

Lots of employees, very few patrons.

We have a pretty every day existence here in Kigali; I go to the mall and get groceries at the grocery store. UTC (Union Trade Center) is a tiny mall with a Kenyan department store (including a supermarket) called Nakumatt. Though customer service is incredibly unpredictable, we've come to feel at home in it's slightly scatological aisles.

For the month of June, I was abroad on vacation in the US and Zanzibar. I certainly took a break from working every day, but as I am a photographer, through and through, I thought I'd share some
of the highlights of my time. Enjoy.

My best friend, Barb's son, Teague (farthest to the left), in his third grade school play in New Hampshire, USA.
