February 1, 2014

In honor of my very, very mild form of synesthesia, I give you images of red, as February is my red month.

Because we love her.

When testing various functions on my camera, I find that my models are frequently furry little beasts of love.  You all know Lucky (and Debbie's rump).  Say hello.  She won't bite.  Really.

Creative Mornings is an organization that Kigali was just accepted into, as only the 2nd city on the African Continent to enjoy the honor.  Click the embedded link to learn more.

This month's theme was "Childhood."  We were delighted to have Rwandan animator, Sam Zizinga, discuss his work creating children's television shows in the Kinyarwandan language, with Rwandan themes.  Below are a few moments from our lunch event (yes, we do Creative Lunches, as people go to work by 7 a.m. and no one wants to rise up at 5 to get to a 6 a.m. event!)

Intore dancer, frozen in paint and time.

Intore dance is a very revered and traditional part of Rwandan culture.  Women, men and children perform with song and dance as they act out various hunting and community rituals of 19th and early 20th century Rwandan tribes.  For more information, go here.

As I edited this photo, I realized I was turning it into a visual version of the way I actually felt when I saw this tree in person.  Hope you feel it, too.

A common implement for drinking all types of beverages here in Rwanda.  I find I frequently have a cup o' wine in one of these babies.

While resting and recuperating in the mountains of Rwanda, I was fortunate to witness the sun's nightly curtain call.  Splendiforous.

I love shiny things.  Rain helps me out in that regard.

January 19, 2014

Rwanda has two rainy seasons--one short, the other long.  Our short season rumbles through from September 1st to the end of December.  Typically, the entirety of January is hot and dry.  The second season usually begins in February.  This year, our friend climate change has brought the rains early.  This water-maker is likely to last till the beginning of June.

I'm obsessed with this ring.  My husband found it at a jewelry maker's shop in Cape Town, South Africa about 2 years ago and gave it to me for my birthday.  He knows me pretty danged well.

I'm really getting into shooting macro images of fabric and hand-crafted items.  This is one of a pair of gorgeous pillows at The Office in Kiyovu.  Nice eye candy when I'm staring off into space from my desk.

While sorting through my old photos from Kampala in 2008, I found this image of a baby who reminds me SO much of a few of my kids at my story hour here at the public library in Kigali.  Such an expressive human, he is.

While living in Kampala in 2008, I had a posse. Every evening as I walked home from work, this group of kids would meet up with me for the last leg of my commute, and escort me home.

Taking a backward glance at some photos from Uganda, c. 2008.
These photos were captured at sunset on the shores of the Sesse Islands in Lake Victoria.  Very relaxing time spent there; I highly recommend it for some R&R away from Kampala.  It's just a short bus and reasonable boat ride for a weekend.

Sometimes, here in the Kigs, we just adapt.  So, the garage door handle is broken.  No worries, we'll just lock 'er up in our own, special way.

January 8, 2014

My mother's stepmother, Ruth, made this wonderful afghan blanket for me when I was a wee lass.  It is made of acrylic materials so that we get the best of its warmth while still being able to throw it in the laundry, which is good, as our boys sleep on it for at least 8 hours a day, every day.  I love how it looks with my Macro lens.

Busy day today.  Not enough time to grab my camera that is miles away from me at the moment.  So, I present an image from the archives.  And by archives, I mean last week.

Enjoy.
