I make photographs for clients ranging from the government of Rwanda, Visa, Inc., Johns Hopkins University and the Rwanda national newspaper, The New Times. My Picture of the Day project is here to serve a few purposes: to expose my growing international audience to what life is like as an expat, to keep my photography chops well-exercised and to gain future freelance jobs. Please feel free to email me at julierue@gmail.com with any queries.

Creative Mornings is an organization that Kigali was just accepted into, as only the 2nd city on the African Continent to enjoy the honor. Click the embedded link to learn more.
This month's theme was "Childhood." We were delighted to have Rwandan animator, Sam Zizinga, discuss his work creating children's television shows in the Kinyarwandan language, with Rwandan themes. Below are a few moments from our lunch event (yes, we do Creative Lunches, as people go to work by 7 a.m. and no one wants to rise up at 5 to get to a 6 a.m. event!)

Intore dancer, frozen in paint and time.
Intore dance is a very revered and traditional part of Rwandan culture. Women, men and children perform with song and dance as they act out various hunting and community rituals of 19th and early 20th century Rwandan tribes. For more information, go here.

Rwanda has two rainy seasons--one short, the other long. Our short season rumbles through from September 1st to the end of December. Typically, the entirety of January is hot and dry. The second season usually begins in February. This year, our friend climate change has brought the rains early. This water-maker is likely to last till the beginning of June.

I'm really getting into shooting macro images of fabric and hand-crafted items. This is one of a pair of gorgeous pillows at The Office in Kiyovu. Nice eye candy when I'm staring off into space from my desk.

My mother's stepmother, Ruth, made this wonderful afghan blanket for me when I was a wee lass. It is made of acrylic materials so that we get the best of its warmth while still being able to throw it in the laundry, which is good, as our boys sleep on it for at least 8 hours a day, every day. I love how it looks with my Macro lens.
